South Africa Preview
After a bruising red-ball tour to Australia, it feels like South African cricket is at a serious crossroads. It was against England just over a decade ago that the Proteas became the number one Test team in the world, however, the team’s recent loss down under was a potent reminder that this current generation of players is way off the world’s best.
With the launch of the SA20, the newest T20 franchise league aimed at manifesting off the success of the Indian Premier League, South African cricket is attempting a complete revamp. In a similar vein to how England’s red and white ball fortunes were transformed on the back of prioritizing the shorter formats first, it’s hoped the SA20 will enable a braver, more aggressive type of cricketer.
It should be remembered though that the last time England and South Africa played an ODI series, back in the summer of 2022, the two sides finished level at 1-1.
England became the first cricket side in history to hold both the ODI and T20 World Cups at the same time following their wins in the 2019 and 2022 editions respectively. The two tournament triumphs were the crowning moment of a transition first begun in 2015 under Eoin Morgan, and there are already signs that the Three Lions are on the cusp of rejuvenating their set-up with more, potentially even better, players.
Sam Curran was named the Player of the Tournament at the 2022 T20 World Cup, rounding out his incredible year, and Harry Brook earned the Player of the Series award for his three centuries in three Test matches during England’s recent series win over Pakistan.
Captain Jos Buttler might have had a shaky start to life as skipper during the home summer against South Africa, but the imperious form shown by himself and his side should serve to remind the cricketing world that the Three Lions are still amongst the best in the business.

South African cricket is sure to be on the rise in the coming years, especially with the success of the SA20 behind them. The likes of Quinton de Kock and Dewald Brevis are some of the most exciting white-ball talents in the world, and the recent white-ball tour of England will certainly give the Proteas plenty of optimism ahead of the tour.
However, we’re not ready to write this England team off yet. World Champions in both formats, the Three Lions are heavy favourites with every cricket betting market, and we’re back Jos and the boys to get the job done again in South Africa.
