Birmingham Phoenix Preview
Now probably isn’t the time to get smug, but we did say the Birmingham Phoenix were going to win The Hundred in our 2022 predictions.
The team finished at the summit of The Hundred 2021 table with six wins and two losses, before losing the final by 32 runs. The team lost their opening game of The Hundred 2022, but have really hit their stride in the three games since.
On the back of the first Hundred century by Will Smeed, the Phoenix opened their account with a 53-run win over the Southern Brave, before wins against the Welsh Fire and Trent Rockets, the latter of which saw Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone register their first half-centuries of the tournament.
The Phoenix have already gone about making Edgbaston a fortress this season, winning both of their matches at home so far, setting 178 against the Brave, and successfully chasing 145 by seven wickets against the Rockets.
Northern Superchargers Preview
For the Northern Superchargers, it’s hard to see this fixture as anything other than ‘crunch time’.
The side are currently sitting four points behind the Phoenix outside the top three, with just one win in four matches so far, meaning a loss here will effectively kill off their playoff hopes for the year. Having beaten the Manchester Originals by six wickets in the opening fixture, the Superchargers have lost to the Trent Rockets, Oval Invincibles, and London Spirit. All of these defeats have come with the Superchargers batting first, and the sides’ scores of 152/8, 158/7, and 143/5 all point to the team being unable to motor along and make the big totals needed to win games.
Dwayne Bravo has at least been a welcome bright spark for the Northern Superchargers this season. The Caribbean veteran has taken five wickets from eighty deliveries this season at a decent economy rate of just 148.75.
