In an alternate universe, Tim David’s direct run-out straight from the boundary rope doesn’t dismiss the red-hot Liam Livingstone and the Birmingham Phoenix finish as comfortable winners of the inaugural season of The Hundred. Such is life, and such are the fine margins involved with high-level sports. Birmingham Phoenix and the Southern Brave were the two best teams in the 2021 Hundred, and we’re going to be treated to the biggest game of the 2022 edition so far with a repeat of last year’s final. Birmingham Phoenix Preview – Time For Ali And Co. To Step Up
As well as topping the table and finishing the 2021 season within touching distance of the title, the Birmingham Phoenix entered this year’s Hundred season as one of the early favorites in most cricket betting markets.
However, their opening fixture against the Trent Rockets was far from the sort of start we were expecting to see from Moeen Ali’s men.
The team’s total of 143/7 wasn’t the worst score we’ve ever seen in The Hundred, with Miles Hammond, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone all making starts on the dry Nottingham pitch, but it was definitely the sort of score where you could feel runs had been left out there at the end of the innings.
What was more concerning was how blunt the Phoenix’s bowling unit looked with Adam Milne sidelined through injury. Alex Hales and Joe Root for the Rockets are class batters no doubt, but the way in which they cantered through their run-chase will be of huge concern to the Phoenix.
Southern Brave Preview – The Team To Beat Again?
On the flip side, the Southern Brave once again looked like title contenders in their opening fixture against the Welsh Fire. Now, the Fire look like hot favorites for the wooden spoon in this year’s competition, but the ease in which the Brave went about their business at the Rose Bowl certainly made them look like the team to beat again.
What’s more, this was a Southern Brave side without star names like Paul Stirling, Quinton de Kock, Tymal Mills, and George Garton.
James Vince has been in spectacular form all summer, captaining the Hampshire Hawks to the 2022 Vitality BLAST title, and he entered the 2022 Hundred in ominous form with 71* (41) and the Match Hero award. Not only have people begun to ponder his place in England’s white-ball teams, but they’ve also begun to notice his captaincy skills which are beginning to look more and more Eoin Morgan-esque with every passing game.
