Northern Superchargers Preview – Darkhorses To Root For?
The Northern Superchargers have entered the 2022 season of The Hundred with the arrival of Faf du Plessis as the side’s skipper, and already it’s looking like a real difference-maker in the team’s ambitions f0r this year’s campaign.
Du Plessis has captained his country at every level, won franchise tournaments like the IPL with CSK, and enjoyed a stellar campaign in the subcontinent in his first outing as skipper of RCB. And the South African’s influence on the side could already be seen in how the team handled their win over the Manchester Originals, overcoming a tough-to-call game to run out comfortable 6-wicket winners.
David Willey, Dwayne Bravo, and Adil Rashid bowled beautifully to restrict Originals to 161/4; a decent total but one that was undoubtedly gettable. This trio of bowlers look like they are going to be the foundation to the side this season, and there’s no doubting their experience and guile will continue to outfox batters over the remainder of the season.
Trent Rockets Preview – The Rockets On The Up
The Trent Rockets were another one of the disappointments of the 2021 Hundred, falling short of their pre-tournament odds and finishing second from bottom at the end of the campaign.
Their disappointments from 2021, coupled with not much movement in The 2022 Hundred draft, led to some speculating that this year could have been even more of a rough ride than last year.
However, the team’s superb opening win over the Birmingham Phoenix threw a spanner in the works to all of that. The Phoenix are our early pick for the 2022 Hundred title, but they were completely controlled by the Rockets throughout the match. With both seam and spin, the Rockets restricted Birmingham to just 143/7, before making light work of the chase on a pitch that some thought looked tricky to bat on.
Alex Hales reminded fans of his white-ball talent with a superb 58 (41), being backed up adeptly by England skipper Joe Root, who finished with 34* (26).
