Welsh Fire Preview – Worrying Signs For Kirsten And Co.

The Welsh Fire had one of the toughest preparations for the 2022 Hundred season, with captain Jonny Bairstow dropping out as well as exciting Pakistani seamer Naseem Shah declaring himself unavailable.

The side opened their campaign with a tricky test to The Ageas Bowl to face 2021 champions Southern Brave, being put in to bat after losing the toss. To be fair, the Fire look a team this season that lean more heavily with the bat than with the ball, and they named a batting lineup against the Brave that looked dangerous on paper. Ben Duckett finished the 2021 season with the second-most amount of runs, and the Fire also had England batters Ollie Pope and Tom Banton at the crease on Wednesday night.

To end up being skittled for just 107 was, therefore, not a great start to proceedings. Comical runouts, a couple of dropped catches from Ryan Higgins, and a bowling display that just showcased how the team didn’t grasp the surface in the way the Brave did meant the Fire could have no complaints about their hefty nine-wicket defeat.

Head coach Gary Kirsten will be hoping the team’s first home match will be an opportunity for a reset, but the early signs are certainly worrying for the Welsh Fire.

Oval Invincibles Preview – Rustiness Proves Costly For The Invincibles

The Oval Invincibles will also be disappointed with how their first match of the 2022 Hundred played out, though for very different reasons than the Fire.

The side were already looking at a hefty run chase in their season opener against the London Spirit at The Oval on Thursday, but a series of sloppy bowling and ill-discipline in the field meant they were tasked with chasing down 171 in their 100 balls. Given the previous highest successful run chase at The Oval in The Hundred had been 147, it was an unlikely total made even more unlikely when the Invincibles lost their opening four wickets for 12 runs.

Jason Roy was dismissed for a golden duck to compound his miserable summer, though the unlikeliest of fightbacks meant that the team only ended up losing by a nail-biting 3 runs in the end.

It was the Invincibles’ first loss at home in The Hundred, but they shot themselves in the foot by getting muddled up with the cut-off and not bowling all their deliveries in time. ‘Rustiness’ is probably the most accurate word we can use to describe the Invincibles in their performance against the Spirit.

Welsh Fire vs Oval Invincibles Odds, Betting Tips And Picks

In our latest Hundred betting markets, Oval Invincibles are well clear as favorites for this Sunday’s fixture at 8/13. Welsh Fire’s abject performance on the south coast sees them priced down at 17/12

This looks like it could be a fixture that all comes down to one innings, with the Fire’s strongest attribute being their batting and the Invincibles’ being their bowling. With that in mind, one betting market you might want to watch out for is Top Away Bowler, which revolves around which Invincible player you think might finish with the best figures.

Reece Topley is currently leading this market with odds of 3/1, however, Sunil Narine looks a good bet at 4/1, and Sam Curran produced a solid spell at the death to help lower his odds to 9/2.
